We survived another Fantastic Arcade! And after a long weekend recovering, we’re here with archived video of nearly all the talks, tournaments, and other presentations given throughout the week of our seventh-annual festival.
All week long we’ll be presenting a day-by-day breakdown of all of the videos, starting today with last Monday’s talks. Below the fold you’ll find full video covering HIDDEN FOLKS, Dutch indie collective Sokpop, BURRITO GALAXY 65 and WEST OF LOATHING.
You’ll also find our preliminary tournament of MULTIBOWL, the rapid-fire head-to-head trip back through arcade and console history!

Robby Kraft (NYC) is perhaps best known for his work in origami. His breathtaking and organic forms, created from the careful folding of paper, have been exhibited internationally.
During his monthlong arcade of anything residency, Kraft has applied his interests in geometry, scale, and play to the world of virtual reality. Shifting Sand Lands is an experimental sandbox rendered simultaneously in virtual and physical worlds. In advance of the opening, you can keep tabs on the development of Shifting Sand Lands on Kraft’s arcade of anything devlog.
For opening night, Kraft will be joined by Nathan Ober and his work The Observer or the Observed?, a sound installation inspired by astrophysics, microtonal sound, and Buddhist thought. We’ll also have refreshments, our world-famous Fantastic Arcade cabinets set up for free play, and a special musical guest that you won’t want to miss.
The arcade of anything event kicks off at 7:00 PM at the Museum of Human Achievement in Austin, TX. Admission is free, but donations–which help fund this and other JUEGOS RANCHEROS programming–are warmly accepted.
[Created in partnership with the Museum of Human Achievement, the arcade of anything artist residency encourages its participants to push into experimental and unexplored territory within digital arts. More information on our residency program can be found here.]
Want to bring this year’s Fantastic Arcade home to you? We’ve got the perfect way! We’ve just launched a bundle of five amazing and exclusive games making their debut at our seventh-annual indie game festival, Fantastic Arcade.
Thanks to our distribution partner itch.io, all proceeds from the sale of this bundle benefit our non-profit organization. Help us showcase more amazing games both here in Austin and a city near you, and commission more fantastic developers to create new games like these!
Included in this bundle are all five games you see here, along with extras & bonus materials! Here is what you’ll get:
NIUM, by Moppin & Nemk
DOWNWELL creator Moppin has partnered with Nemk (one of our favorite artists working in games) to present NIUM: a post-apocalyptic action game where players will crawl through a ruined, abandoned, STALKER-esque exclusion zone inhabited only by a variety of mutated wildlife. (Windows, Mac)
ALPHABET, by Keita Takahashi & Adam Saltsman
Originally available only to select Kickstarter backers, ALPHABET is a slapstick marathon footrace for 1- to 26-players from Keita Takahashi (renowned creator of KATAMARI DAMACY & NOBY NOBY BOY) and Adam Saltsman (designer behind CANABALT & OVERLAND). Run, jump, eat, sing, poop, and sleep through silly obstacle courses!
(Windows, Mac, Linux)
INSPECTOR WOOF, by Klondike
From Klondike — France’s upstart super-collective of indie game stars — INSPECTOR WOOF & THE VEGETABLE HIGH SCHOOL is a procedurally generated mystery adventure game where every student is hiding terrible secrets. Armed only with your freshly-printed hints sheet, dig deep into their guilty consciences and expose the truth! (Windows, Mac, Linux)
F2OGGY, by Nathalie Lawhead
F2OGGY (Only one survives!) is a Brute-Force Frog-Combat Simulator, by the IGF-winning creator Nathalie Lawhead, made for a growing audience of competitive frogfans. Each player is divided into a faction (a Frog-Faction), and must defeat their opponent using High-Velocity Amphibian Impact Lunges. (Windows, Mac)
LASSOS, by SOKPOP
From SOKPOP — the the Dutch collective behind indie cult classics like the low-fi sci-fi exploration game BERNBAND — comes LASSOS, a game fit for its Texas debut: throw lassos, get money! (Windows, Mac)
Following our announcement of brand new games from the studios behind Downwell, Tetrageddon Games, Bernband and Orchids to Dusk making their debut at Fantastic Arcade, we have just announced 20 more games rounding out this year’s festival lineup.
The games join the 10 previously-announced Spotlight games coming to Austin, TX’s South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse this September 22nd-29th, and were chosen by JUEGOS RANCHEROS from the nearly 250 games submitted from developers around the world.
Below the fold are details of the 20 Showcase games coming to this year’s festival, followed by the official Fantastic Arcade press release announcing our featured speakers & tournaments (Multibowl! Downwell with creator Moppin in attendance! & more!), as well as details on our opening night party at Empire Control Room, and our VR Lounge coming on the final day of the festival.
JUEGOS RANCHEROS is pleased to announce Robby Kraft as the Fall 2016 arcade of anything resident.
Currently residing in New York City, Robby Kraft is a software developer and origami master with a special interest in geometry and scale. His time at the arcade of anything residency promises to combine these passions and translate them into a digital landscape—we can’t wait to see what unfolds!
Kraft’s residency will conclude with a public exhibition on Friday, September 30 at JUEGOS RANCHEROS’s indie arcade space, the Museum of Human Amusement. This exhibition falls on the day after Fantastic Arcade ends, so plan to stay in Austin for the week and catch both wonderful events!
The month-long arcade of anything artist residency, created in partnership with the Museum of Human Achievement, encourages participants to push into experimental and unexplored territory within digital arts. You can read more about the residency program here.
Please join us in congratulating Robby Kraft, and stay tuned for more details on his exhibition event on September 30.
Robby Kraft is an origami artist and engineer from Texas now living in New York City. He creates open-source tools that reinscribe relationships between computer algorithms, nature, and music.
Want to get a rapid-fire, head-to-head, competitive trip back through all of videogame history? Then be sure to join us Thursday, September 1st, at 7:00PM at Austin’s North Door, as JUEGOS RANCHEROS presents a sneak-peek at Multibowl, a brand new multiplayer mashup of hundreds of vintage games.
Co-created by Bennett Foddy (creator of QWOP, GIRP & one of the leads behind Sportsfriends) and Alec Thomson (himself co-creator of last year’s Fantastic Arcade favorite, Beglitched), Multibowl gives two players a fast-paced series of tiny fragments of emulated games collected from the past 30+ years, and keeps a running meta-tally of each player’s success.
The Multibowl winner is the one who can adapt to each fragment as it’s tossed their way, be it a classic fighting game, a cult-classic arcade puzzler, or straight up just 15 seconds of the actual Super Nintendo version of Mario Kart.
Ahead of Multibowl‘s official festival debut at Portland’s XOXO Festival, and its subsequent official tournament appearance at this year’s Fantastic Arcade, JUEGOS RANCHEROS will be presenting the game as a special sneak-peek warm-up for tournament hopefuls, alongside a few other Fantastic Arcade preview selections.
Multibowl and more will be playable September 1st, at 7:00PM at North Door, 501 Brushy Street, Austin, TX 78702. The show is free, all ages, and open to all the public, so come join us as we drink, play and meet the people changing the way we think about games!
