Evan Narcisse writes about video games, comic books, movies and TV, often focusing on the intersection of blackness and pop culture. He is a senior staff writer at io9, having previously written for The Atlantic, Time Magazine, and Kotaku. He’s currently writing the Rise of the Black Panther miniseries for Marvel Comics. A native New Yorker, he now lives in Austin, Texas.
Evan’s selections for the night include Rez Infinite (the remaster and re-release of Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s seminal masterpiece Rez) as well as Mike Bithell’s BAFTA-winning Thomas Was Alone, a minimalist story-platformer about some boxes that live in a cave. We’ll also check out Freedom Cry (originally DLC for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag) in which players inhabit an assassin in 18th Century Haiti, and Baiyon’s astonishing PixelJunk Eden, made in collaboration with Japan’s Q-Games (the influential predecessor to recent smartphone release Eden Obscura).
What do all these games have in common? Why are they so important to Evan Narcisse? If you want to see what it’s all about, be sure to join us Thursday, June 7th, at 7:00PM at North Door, 501 Brushy Street, Austin, TX 78702!
A short introduction begins at 8:00PM. The show is free, all ages, and open to all the public, so come join us as we drink, play and meet the people changing the way we think about games!

Created by Adam LeDoux, Bitsy is a web-based tool for making little games and little worlds, where you explore and hang out and talk to people. Less really is more when it comes to Bitsy – a perfect example of the way constraints breed creativity.
Simple, accessible, and fun to use, Bitsy even has its own little art tools built in, as well as branching dialog controls, and the ability to move between rooms. It’s a bit like Hypercard for Gameboy, or if Zelda had a level editor (and no swords).
Our guest curator this month is Becklespinax, who has personally assembled a fascinating cross-section of this new scene. If you want to see what it’s all about, be sure to join us Thursday, May 3rd, at 7:00PM at North Door, 501 Brushy Street, Austin, TX 78702!
A short introduction begins at 8:00PM. The show is free, all ages, and open to all the public, so come join us as we drink, play and meet the people changing the way we think about games!
A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Juegos Rancheros leadership was recently made aware of several concerns regarding Brandon Boyer’s conduct in our community. As a first step toward addressing these claims, the leadership has voted unanimously to dismiss him from the Juegos Rancheros Board of Directors, effective immediately. While no final decision has been reached, we believe this is the best way forward while we continue to investigate the matter.

We are taking some additional steps to ensure the Juegos Rancheros community continues to thrive. We are revising our existing Safe Spaces Policy to provide more specific guidance on appropriate conduct and conflict resolution. We are also working to improve avenues for collecting anonymous feedback about community concerns and leading the formation of a response team to ensure that our policies are enforced promptly, safely, and fairly. Finally, we are taking this opportunity to grow and diversify the membership of our Board of Directors to ensure that our leadership accurately represents the diverse perspectives of our community.
The Juegos Rancheros Board of Directors deeply regrets that these additional provisions were not in place before we began to receive reports, and we sincerely apologize for the confusion, hurt, or distrust this caused for anyone in our community. We are committed to fostering a welcoming and safe environment, and the remedies outlined above are our next steps toward achieving this goal.
We will continue to provide updates regarding our code of conduct and conflict resolution. However, we also want to hear from you. Please let us know if you are interested in providing peer review of our Safe Spaces Policy, participating in our response team, or joining the Juegos Rancheros Board of Directors. Thank you for your understanding in this time of difficult but necessary transition. We care deeply for our community and look forward to seeing you at the next Juegos Rancheros event.

JUEGOS RANCHEROS
It’s one of 2018’s most anticipated indie games, but did you know its roots lead straight back here to Austin? Come find out what we mean Thursday, April 5th, at 7:00PM at Austin’s North Door, as JUEGOS RANCHEROS presents a brief history of MINIT, the 60-second adventure game.

Created by Kitty Calis, JW Nijman, Jukio Kallio & Dominik Johann — a supergroup collectively known for their work on games like Nuclear Throne, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Luftrausers, and Dr. Langeskov — Minit sees players trying to lift a mysterious curse which ends each day after just one minute.
Due for PC, PS4 and Xbox One release on April 3rd, from Austin’s own Devolver Digital, we’ll be giving Austinites the opportunity to experience those minute-long loops themselves, alongside a short introduction about the making of the game, as well as a selection of other games from its creators.
Just how exactly does Adventure Time fit in to the game’s past? Be sure to join us Thursday, April 5th, at 7:00PM at North Door, 501 Brushy Street, Austin, TX 78702 to find out!
A short introduction begins at 8:00PM. The show is free, all ages, and open to all the public, so come join us as we drink, play and meet the people changing the way we think about games!
